Getting a second opinion is always a good idea. Ask Melanie Nuessen.
An injury originally diagnosed as a broken vertebra — one that Nuessen says might have ended her soccer career — was later determined not to be a fracture. Off came the neck brace she had been wearing, and on went the Emporia High senior-to-be’s career as the Spartan goalkeeper.
Nuessen doesn’t recall too much about the moment she got kicked in the face during EHS’s season-ending Regional loss at Salina Central on May 19. She had stopped eight shots in a scoreless game until she got kicked with 26 minutes to go.
“I didn’t lose (consciousness),” Nuessen said. “I just felt the pain in my face, really, from where she hit me. And then when everybody started coming over, I just got really tired and really dizzy, and that’s all I really remembered.”
