Controversial call spoils Gold’s chances of a sweep

The Emporia A-16 Gold team split a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Burlington, winning the first game 15-8 before coming out on the wrong side of a controversial ending in a 6-5 defeat in Game Two.
Led by Jackson Perez’s 4-for-4 performance, Emporia slugged its way to the win in Game One, and Chase Speer relieved starting pitcher Daniel Finch in the fourth inning to pick up the victory. It was the beginning of a busy night on the mound for Speer, who went on to pitch the final 2 2/3 innings of Game Two — and ended up right in the center of the controversy.
