Former ESU pitcher Trent Lare has been waiting to get the call from a Major League organization since he finished his senior season with Emporia State in 2007.
On Monday night, Lare finally got the call, and he leaves Thursday for Staten Island, N.Y., where he will join the New York Yankees’ short-season Class A rookie team.
Lare, 24, had been pitching for the Kalamazoo Kings, an independent league team in the Frontier League, and thanks to an impressive start to the season — 2.34 ERA in five starts — he’s getting his first chance in the minor leagues.
“I’ve always dreamed to play in the big leagues and you can’t do that if you’re not playing affiliated baseball with somebody,” Lare said. “It’s an honor to get picked up by them and finally get a chance.”
