EHS softball coach Owens retires

About a third of the way into his 35th season of teaching or coaching in the Emporia school district, Ray Owens began to seriously consider retirement.
His shoulder, which he eventually had surgery on in late May, was killing him, along with other parts of his body. He couldn’t hit ground balls and fly balls anymore, and practice was taking its toll on him.
So on Monday, with his right arm still in a sling following his rotator cuff surgery, Owens announced his retirement after eight seasons as Emporia High’s head softball coach and three-plus decades in the district.
