There is no shortage of things to do this weekend in and around Emporia, from a FolkLife Festival to a barbecue festival.
Saturday
• 8 a.m., Madison Days begins in Madison. Activities include a Hula-Hoop contest, minnow race, the Verdigris Valley River Run and Bike and Trike Race, first annual bed race and a city-wide “Hokey Pokey” dance.
• 8 a.m., Emporia Farmer’s Market and fundraiser, 701 Merchant St.
• 8 a.m., Flint Hills SmokeStock, South Congress and South West streets, Peter Pan Park.
• 9 a.m., Flint Hills FolkLife Festival, Cottonwood Falls, A full day of reenactments, demonstrations, food and fun. Herbalists, soap making, rope making, wood carvers, blacksmiths, quilters and weavers.
• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., An exhibition of works by the late J. Warren Brinkman, Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St.
• 10 a.m., Cooking class — butts and brisket, 10 a.m., at SmokeStock.
• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tour Pioneer Bluffs Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. View art in juried art show from area artists exhibited in the 1916 barn. Held at Pioneer Bluffs, south of Cottonwood Falls on Kansas Highway 177.
• Noon, parking lot opens for Symphony in the Flint Hills. Concert begins at 6:45 p.m., south of Cedar Point in the Flint Hills.
• 7:30 p.m. Romantic comedy “Beau Jest” last performance of the first production of the Emporia State University Summer Theatre’s 55th season, Bruder Theater, Emporia State University.
Sunday
• 8 a.m., Madison Days.
• 1 p.m., Docent in the Zoo, David Traylor Zoo in Soden’s Grove.
• 8 p.m., Live music: Live Fast Die, Iron Guts Kelly, The Cups, Balldozer, at Mulligan’s, 23 E. Sixth Ave.
