This is what happens when you wait.
The Emporia AAAs kept waiting for that big hit as they crept closer and closer with each Coffeyville mistake on Thursday night at Soden’s Grove. But Emporia found out, when you wait, you lose.
Coffeyville just barely hung on to a 5-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader, preventing the AAAs from completing the two-game sweep after taking Game One 9-3.
It’s not that Emporia didn’t have its chances.
The AAAs had runners at second and third with no outs in the fifth inning. They had runners at the corners with two outs in the sixth, and they had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh.
“We’re just a couple hits away from not only taking the lead,” Emporia coach Brad Kelly said, “but maybe breaking it open a little bit.”
The hits never came.
