Character training

Friday, June 12, 2009

Registration continues for Ride into History’s “Preserving Our Past through Performance” workshops Aug. 1 and 2 in Admire. Individuals will learn how to choose a character and then how to research, write and perform a first-person narrative of a historic figure or composite character. Attendees will be treated to Joyce Thierer and Ann Birney’s performances of Calamity Jane and Amelia Earhart and introduced to other characters. There also will be a retreat and critique opportunity for those who have attended earlier workshops. Anyone is welcome to participate. The workshop will be held at the “Now Get to Work!” scholars’ retreat and studio behind the post office at Admire. The $140 fee includes all meals and materials. Undergraduate and graduate college credit is available through Emporia State University. E-mail ridehist@satelephone.com or call (620) 528-3580 for a schedule and registration form.

Thierer and Birney have been conducting historical performance workshops for adults for more than 10 years and performing professionally for almost 20 years. They are Kansas Humanities Council scholars and on Kansas Arts Council and Mid-America Arts Alliance rosters and have earned Kansas Arts Commission honors, stated the news release. The major sponsor of the workshops is Ride into History Cultural and Educational Project, Inc., a not-for-profit organization devoted to making history accessible through the arts.
