Old Hornet field makeover complete with new name

Thursday, June 11, 2009

The old Hornet Field at Emporia State University got a complete makeover this spring, and has emerged as New Spartan Stadium for the Emporia High School junior varsity baseball team.

It will also be used by the AAA Legion team, Legion Blue and Gold teams, and the Emporia Thunder and Emporia Rebel teams.

A similar renovation already has taken place at the university’s softball diamond used by the pre-collegiate girls. Deborah Huth noticed the contrast between the softball field and the old Hornet Field as she left a game with her daughter, Cassandra, a pitcher for the EHS team.

Huth contacted ESU athletic director Kent Weiser to see if something similar could be done for the boys and, if it could, what would be allowed. She also talked about the project with EHS athletic director Britton Hart.

“Kent Weiser has been amazing in working with the school, working with Britton Hart ... in allowing these changes,” Huth said.

While parents and other volunteers from the community came up with the plans, the materials and the money to make the changes, the players had a major role in making sure the job got done.

I guess that leaves high school boys for the Soden's. Why don't they do it at the fields on South Ave they see alot of neglect, would be great to have nice fields all over town.
