Newman Nursing Chief makes big changes

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Education and communication are taking prominent roles at Newman Regional Health as a result of programs implemented by chief of nursing Julie Stowe.

“We’ve got a lot of nurses going back to school in the fall to get their bachelor’s or master’s (degrees),” Stowe said.

At least eight Newman employees have notified the hospital of their plans, and that pleases Stowe.

But that is merely a bonus for Newman’s emphasis on education. It is a hands-on program that involves a cooperative effort with the Newman School of Nursing under director Judy Calhoun.

If you really WANTED to get to know your staff better, you'd be out on the floor working, side by side with them,Not sitting behind some new desk pushing papers. 1 or 2 days,in scrubs, not a 3 piece suit, out on the floor seeing first hand how hard we DO work, will not put you behind and your schedules, and meetings will not suffer. As for the Directors of floors,I DO see "some" of them actually giving a damn about their staff, and others, dont care anymore,What kind of LEADERSHIP is this,Julie? I think first we need to see some CARING qualities from our LEADERS.

gee, could it be because without the degree they would lose their jobs under the new CEO's plan to boot most of the LPN's and CNA's from their jobs?

Seems to me that since the system was broken before this person arrived we should give her the benefit of the doubt. I suspect once the mess is cleaned up you will probably see her our and about. Then I suppose the employees will be complaining that she is micro-managing them. Education is good and if they are encouraging it so be it. I just know a year ago doctors were calling for something to be done to fix the problems at the hospital. An awful lot of the posts at that time told some pretty scary stories of the kind of treatment they had received. If this person is bringing in best practices from one of the world's most renown clinic (Mayo) seems like we should give her a chance. Quit the sour grapes already.

I still don't understabd how a nurse with half the alphabet behind the RN is going to be better than " an aide, orderly, LPN or RN " when the time comes to change my bedding or rub my sore, bedridden back. Oh wait - we don't do that here anyway. Never mind. Better they educate the alleged "doctors" that they are NOT God in the also alleged "ER".

If I might make a suggestion, there are studies being done around the world that show that playing Logjam music has a healing effect on people recoverying from various boo boos. Papau New Guinea has pretty much abandoned traditional medicine for this technique. If you're open to "thinkin' outside the box" you might want to look into it.

just the facts,,obviously YOU dont know the facts...Some of the Dr's ARE the problem. And you cant please all the ppl all the time..there are those who are gonna complain and bitch no matter what you do or how they are taken care of.But, you will never convince me that just because you have several letters after your RN,that you can care for a patient any better than any other nurse.I would lay money down that a patient cannot tell the difference in the care they receive from a diploma/degree nurse.

The great thing about Logjam is that since they spanned so many genres in their time makin' music that IF someone complains about whatever Logjam you put on for them the chances are pretty good that you will be able to find some tunes they like. It's all good to me but some people are a little strange if you know what I mean.

I think with any job knowlege would come with experience. And the type of care you would recieve would be passion. I think you could have all the knowlege in the world to be a great doctor, but dont they say that also the bedside manor goes along with it. Or have a nurse that has the passion to want to give you the best care possible. In my time at newmans i have had some robots and i have had some above and beyond nurses. But i believe that experience in the field will trump a masters degree.

The people that the mafia(even if it's just 1) whacks don't have to worry about compassionate care in the hospital because they're dead.
