New programs expected to improve skills
Board will hire two strategists to teach

A new system to improve skills of some students at Lowther North and South Intermediate schools was approved at a meeting of the Emporia board of education Wednesday evening in the Mary Herbert Learning Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave.
Patricia Smiley, director of insstruction, explained the "Read 180" and "System 44" programs and the need for two new certified strategist positions "to really give it a good start."
Smiley told the board that a total of 119 students from the two buildings, which house fifth- and sixth-graders, scored below grade levels on recent assesment tests. Not all of those students would be brought into the new programs.
The board met in executive session for 20 minutes to discuss a personnel matter, then came back for a 10-minute extension. At the end of the sessions, the board voted to uphold the recommendation of the hearing officer. Board members did not disclose the recommendation, nor the personnel involved in the matter.
