Fireworks questions answered

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

After a one-year absence, this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show should work out fine, even though the event will not be held at the Lyon County Fairgrounds as it traditionally has been.

Members of the Emporia Police Department, the Emporia Fire Department, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Flint Hills Optimists were on hand at Emporia High School on Monday to answer questions from community members about the proposed location for this year’s fireworks — the Jones Aquatic Center.

“We’ve been working to make this happen, to make a good community celebration,” said Fire Chief Jack Taylor, adding that the purpose of the meeting was to answer questions and concerns from residents and property owners in the area, including schools, churches and businesses. About 10 people attended the meeting.
