Kindermusik program returns for Emporia Children

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Parents of young children in the Emporia area have a good reason to be excited — after a three-year absence, Kindermusik is back.

The program, which uses a variety of musical and movement-based techniques to help children develop both physically and mentally during their early years, has been brought back to Emporia by a former elementary music teacher for the benefit of local youths and families.

Sara Coltrane completed her Kindermusik certification last fall and now offers the weekly classes at the First Christian Church, 202 E. 12th Avenue. Coltrane offers a variety of classes for children from birth to 7 years of age.

Kindermusik is a curriculum-based program that uses music, movement, instruments and sign language to help young children develop critical skills in their early years. According to the program’s Web site, the 30-year-old program helps children to develop language, motor and social skills, cognitive development, emotional growth and musicality.

“Children actually love music,” Coltrane said, “so Kindermusik takes that and uses it to help children learn and grow during their early years. We do pre-reading activities, singing, instruments and sign language.”

And the program is not just for the kids.

“Also it helps parents to have one-on-one time with their children as well as giving them ideas on what they can do with their kids at home that’s developmentally appropriate,” Coltrane said.
