LeRoy
The Coffey County Republican reported that Jerry Tiemeyer took the oath of office on May 4 as the LeRoy City Council’s newest member. Tiemeyer replaces Denice Yoho, who has served four years as a council member.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that a new telephone system has been installed at the Burlington Police Department. The council authorized purchasing the new system from Stutler Technologies, not to exceed $4,087.55 at the council’s May 6 meeting. The action was necessary after lightning destroyed the former system about a month ago.
Coffey County
The Coffey County Republican reported that the unemployment rate in Coffey County remained lower than the state average during the month of April. The Kansas Department of Labor reported last week a 6.1 percent unemployment rate in the state, which is down from 6.4 percent last month and up from 3.5 percent last year. If Coffey County, the jobless rate is 5.4 percent, which is down from 6.3 percent reported in March, but up from 2.9 percent a year ago. Out of the 5,337 eligible Coffey County workers, 286 were without jobs.
