Kansas! notes J’s
The current issue of Kansas! Magazine pays tribute to J’s Carry Out of Emporia as one of the state’s “Classic Burger Joints.”
Keeping company with the Cozy Inn of Salina and Don’s Drive-In Café of Oakley, J’s shares in the write-up, which singles out the state’s non-franchise restaurants that “feature tasty sandwiches in surroundings nearly unchanged for decades.”
The magazine also tells its readers what Emporia customers already know: “At busy times, expect to wait; The red-and-white building’s two tables and counter seat just 17 people.”
Pet-adoptions in focus
A number of Emporians interested in animal welfare were on hand for a recent workshop presented by Petfinder.com, the online database of homeless pets.
Peggy Derrick represented the city’s animal shelter at the meeting, and Mike McEchron, Sara Kelley, Christina Kahn, Stephanie Sullivan, Renee Flott, James Bordonara and Lola Walker represented the H. Dale Buck Animal Welfare Fund.
The workshop, which focused on fundraising, marketing and strategies to increase animals’ adoptability, was sponsored by PETCO. Madison Animal Control and Rockin Paw Rescue & Adoption Network were hosts.
Care center honored
Golden Living Center-Cottonwood Falls has earned honors in its company: The center will receive one of Golden Living’s 14 Karat Awards. Only 16 centers among the company’s 324 nursing homes receive the annual honor, given for superior performance in delivering care and service to residents.
In a news release, Judy Boyce, executive director of the Cottonwood Falls Center, called the announcement “a true honor.”
“It is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our entire staff,” she said.
