Several people showed up early to the Emporia Main Street Adopt a Garden kick-off Thursday evening.
Emporia Main Street sponsored the program to get volunteers to plant and tend the downtown planting areas. Casey Woods, executive director of Main Street, said nearly 30 gardens have been adopted, mainly on Commercial Street.
“We have had a lot of interest and people are continuing to adopt,” Woods said.
Thursday evening, several people were on hand for the kick-off and new flowers were being planted. There were master gardeners on hand, the David Traylor Zoo provided water for the new gardens and Lyon County K-State Research and Extension Office was on hand to help those wishing to get a garden started.
Those adopting a garden are responsible for maintaining the garden for a year, Woods said.
“There are lots of gardens left (to adopt),” he said.
Gardens range in size from large primary gardens to small secondary tree gardens. Both types are available for adoption. For information or to adopt a garden, go to www.emporiamainstreet.com/ or call Emporia Main Street at 340-6430. Guidelines for the gardens are available online as well.
