Plans are coming together to celebrate Independence Day in Emporia from early morning into the night.
A newly formed group of citizens is planning a fun run, parade, festival and a dance on July 4, while the Flint Hills Optimist Club is planning a fireworks display at the Jones Aquatic Center.
“Basically, we all just kind of started talking about, well, you know it’s kind of sad that Emporia a., doesn’t have a festival of their own and b., didn’t do anything for the Fourth of July,” said Matt Slater, spokesman for the citizens’ group.
