Taco feed fundraiser for Mariah

Teen is in critical condition

A benefit has been scheduled to help with expenses for Mariah Serrano and her family. Mariah, who will be a sophomore at Emporia High School in the fall, was critically injured late Friday afternoon in a collision between the car in which she was riding and a semi-tractor trailer unit.

She was taken by LifeTeam helicopter ambulance to Stormont-Vail Health Care in Wichita, where she remained in critical condition this morning.

Maria Rodriguez is leading a group of volunteers that will prepare and sell fried tacos Saturday at Sacred Heart Parish Center, 101 Cottonwood St.

"Everybody in my office has volunteered to help," said Rodriguez, who works in the Motor Vehicle Department in the Lyon County Courthouse.

Fried or ready-to-cook tacos will be sold from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for $15 per dozen. The ready-to-cook tacos can be frozen, to be thawed and cooked later.

Orders for tacos may be phoned to Rodriguez at (620) 704-4709.

Rodriguez emphasized that orders need to be called in by 3 p.m. on Friday. The group will not be able to provide additional tacos on an "at the door" basis.

A posting by Mariah's family Wednesday night on the CaringBridge Web site reported that the teen now has shown some improvement that could be observed by the doctor. Her neurosurgeon told the family that "he is seeing some purposeful movement from Mariah" and that she moves her left leg and bends it at the knee, in addition to opening her eyes when she coughs.

The family issued a "thank you" through the Web site.

"We will never ever be able to thank everyone for everything they have done for us. The support we have is absolutely amazing! We want you all to know that we could not do this without each and everyone of you!" the message on the journal stated.

The full posting may be seen at www.caringbridge.org. The Web site had recorded more than 16,500 visits to Mariah's journal since Saturday.

I am praying for the family day and night! What a horrible thing to happen to such a young beautiful person!!! I just pray that she continues to fight like she has been.

P.S. StormontVail is in Topeka, not Wichita.
