Bowyer gives camp a boost
Thursday, June 4, 2009
Thanks to a donation from former Emporian Clint Bowyer, who races in NASCAR, Camp Alexander will have enough money to operate summer camp the rest of the summer.
Kay Calvert, chairwoman of Camp Alexander’s board of directors, said Bowyer donated $20,000 to the camp, which will allow it to operate the rest of the summer. Calvert is hoping other funding will come in to allow the camp to keep a director full-time throughout the school year, which is important to the camp’s Adventure program, which runs when school is out.
Camp Alexander took a hard financial hit earlier this year when it lost more than $30,000 in funding from the Hopkins Foundation.
There are still openings for camp this year. Fees are $90 a week. The schedule is as follows:
• June 8-12: Pioneer Week
• June 15-19: Bike Week
• June 29-July 2: Get Fit Week
• July 6-10: Wet n’ Wild Week
• July 13-17: Wonders of Nature Week
• July 20-24: MADD Week (Music, art, drama, dance)
• July 27-31: Survivor Week
• Aug. 3-7: Around the World Week
For more information on how to register for camp, call 342-1386 or stop by the office at 501 Commercial St.

The camp should sign up with Wildlife and Parks for the FISH program since its hurting so bad for money. It's sad nobody in Lyon County will allow people to fish on their property. KDWP pays people to let others fish their property.

That certainly is great news. We send our grand kids there. Since we both work it would be impossible for us to have them stay with us during the summer without Camp Alexander. Many thanks to Clint Bowyer for his generosity

Makes me go Hmmmmm ...... Why do "Celebrities" always have to get their name in the tabloids when they donate money?? Isn’t it good enough that it’s a good cause and they are getting the tax benefits??

Why shouldn't the "Celebrities" get credit? If I dropped money like that, I would want the credit. Besides Team Kansas, it is not like Emporia wouldn't know who donated the money. Way to go Clint, keep it coming!
A true Thank You, those kids are going to have fun!

Gee TeamKansas, jealous of his fame and fortune or are you just always a bird dropping on a freshly washed car?
Thanks Clint, your donations back to the community are appreciated by this fan.

Team, do I detect envy? What do you have against Clint?
Emporia is fortunate to have foundations, funds, entities and people who will give time and $$$ to make this a better place.
