The best in EHS sports a tough pick

Thursday, June 4, 2009

You love to do these columns, and at the same time, you hate to.

My first year covering Emporia High athletics featured plenty of excellent athletic performances, outstanding coaching jobs and memorable moments.

It may be cliched to say, but it’s true: picking the best of the best of a school’s entire athletic year isn’t an easy task, especially when that school won a State wrestling title, made it to the State semifinals in girls basketball and had fine seasons in a number of other sports. But we sportswriters like doing these columns just the same. It’s how we roll.

Out of these best-of awards, only one — Best Game — was an easy choice. The others took thought, hand-wringing, brow-furrowing and measuring one person’s considerable accomplishments against those of another. In the end, these are just one person’s picks, with two to four honorable mentions per category. Plenty of EHS athletes and coaches who won’t be mentioned here had a lot to be proud of this year.
