Auto sales in Emporia and around the nation went up in May, driven by aggressive discounting. That is good news in the short term, but my signal problems for the administration’s drive to increase the average fuel efficiency of American vehicles.
Emporia Motors had a relatively good month in May, according to owner Creig Agler, who said said the dealership seemed to start to turn around last month.
“January and February were good, March and April were off, and May was starting to show signs of improvement,” Agler said. He said the surge seems to be a combination of gas prices being lower than last year and record-high incentives offered by manufacturers. Also, Agler said, people are wanting to buy new cars.
