Guests at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve will have the opportunity to view historic hay and raking methods using draft horses Saturday at the preserve.
Living history interpreters at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve will demonstrate the methods using 19th-century machinery from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can pitch hay into the hay wagon. Living history interpreters also will demonstrate 19th-century techniques of Dutch oven and ranch stove cooking. Interpretive programs will be given at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. From noon to 1 p.m., ranch hands will have a mid-day meal. There also will be live music and wool spinning demonstrations in the barn.
On Sunday, guests can learn about life on the ranch as ranch hands perform their daily activities. Interpretative programs will be given at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
On weekends in June, the one-room schoolhouse will be open from noon to 4 p.m. The school has historic desks, McGuffey Readers and a recitation bench among other classroom items.
A 6.4-mile bus tour of the preserve’s backcountry will be at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily through Oct. 25. There is no charge for the tours. Advance reservations are recommended by calling (620) 273-8494.
Guided tours of the 1881 limestone ranch house are given hourly on the half hour starting at 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
