Fund set up for Serrano family

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

A fund to help defray medical and travel expenses has been set up at Lyon County State Bank on behalf of Mariah Serrano, an Emporia teenager who was injured critically early Friday evening in an accident between a car and a semi-tractor trailer at the intersection of Roads 220 and M.

She remained in critical condition this morning in the intensive care unit at Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka.

The account was set up by friends of Mariah’s father, Emporia Police Officer Ed Serrano, his wife, Carrie, and family, according to information from one of Serrano’s co-workers, Kevin Risley. Risley announced Monday afternoon that Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Doudican had set up the fund.

Serrano was a sheriff’s deputy for several years, and arrangements for the fund were a joint effort between deputies and police officers, Doudican said.

“They’ve got support of family and support of friends. It’s just not me setting it up,” Doudican said this morning. “I’m just the one that did it. ... They’re good friends of mine and we’re getting it taken care of.”

The fund will be used for medical expenses and help with other ongoing expenses that the family may need while Mariah undergoes treatment for her injuries.

Donations may be made to the Mariah Serrano Fund at Lyon County State Bank.

Family members have posted several reports on Mariah’s condition on CaringBridge.org, a Web site that allows family and friends to communicate with others en masse during critical illnesses.

The posting on Monday morning noted that Mariah’s condition had worsened; she had suffered several strokes and had internal bleeding. That afternoon, at 3:28 p.m., the posting said that Mariah had been taken in for exploratory surgery to find the source of the bleeding.

“So we are getting through this, hoping the surgery is a success ... then will go to the next step,” the journal reported. “She’s been a trooper these past few days ... endured a lot to her poor defenseless body. Let’s continue to pray and get through this.”

Let's all pray for this young girl. And much appreciation to the Emporia Police Department and Lyon County Sheriff's Department for starting this fund. Please, everyone contribute. Ed is a fine young man as is his family...

I cant read the updates without tearing up each time. I hope this community really come together and donate.

Has anyone that about fund raising or a charity type auction. I bet business owners would contribute services and merchandise for the cause. I know we will.

Does anyone know if you can donate on-line? I went to the website and can't find any link. There are people at my work who want to donate but don't see how to on-line. Does anyone know? I am not there locally to get to the bank and find out
