City Golf Championship
The Emporia Men’s City Golf Championship will be held Aug. 8-9. The 36-hole event features 18 holes at Emporia Municipal Golf Course and 18 at Emporia Country Club. The entry fee is $55, or $40 for annual members of EMGC.
The championship will consist of four flights established either by handicap or previous five-round score average; players must turn in either one by Aug. 1. Awards will be presented to four places in each flight, and awards will be give to the overall Low Junior and Low Senior. Only residents of Lyon County are eligible to play. Registration fees may be paid at either course’s clubhouse. For more information, call EMGC at 342-7666.
Eisenhower tennis tournaments
The Eisenhower Junior Open Classic tennis tournament is a USTA-sanctioned tourney scheduled for Aug. 6-7 in Abilene. Age groups include U-12, U-14 and U-18 in both singles and doubles. On Aug. 8-9, the Eisenhower Classic tournament will be held; divisions include 3.5 and 4.5, with open singles, doubles and open mixed doubles.
Entry fees for both tournaments are $13 for singles and $16 per pair for doubles. The registration deadline is Aug. 3. Checks should be made payable to Abilene Parks & Recreation. Football P.A. announcers clinic
The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers will conduct a clinic for football public address announcers on Saturday in Topeka.
The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Capitol Federal Natatorium at Hummer Sports Park. It will be for announcers of junior high/middle school games, high school games, college games and youth football. The clinician will be Dan Roberts, stadium announcer for the Kansas City Chiefs. High school and college students who are announcing, or want to do so, are encouraged to register.
In addition to the do’s and don’ts of announcing, the clinic will cover the P.A. announcer’s role in promoting sportsmanship and dealing with emergency situations. To obtain information about the clinic and to register, go to http://www.naspaa.net or call (816) 305-6293.
Twilight 5,000
The Twilight 5,000 Road Race and Fitness Run/Walk is August 15 at 7:45 p.m. at the Flinthills Mall in Emporia. The race is sponsored by the Emporia State cross country team. Entry fee is $12 for anyone who registers before August 8 and $16 for anyone who registers after.
Participants will receive a T-shirt. Sizes are only guaranteed for those who register before August 8. The top three winners in each class (men and women) will receive Adidas apparel. Youth/handicap deer hunt
The Riley County Fish and Game Association, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Tuttle Creek Lake Corps of Engineers are seeking participants for the seventh annual youth/handicap assisted deer hunt on Sept. 12-13.
The hunt is open to youths 11-16 years old or anyone with a certified disability. Participants will need a Kansas hunting license, a deer permit and, if required by law, must also have taken an approved hunter education course. Rifles and ammunition for the hunt can be provided if participants do not have them. All participants will be required to attend a firearm safety presentation and sight-in at the Fancy Creek Ridge at 4 p.m. on Aug. 30.
