ANTONIA FELIX, who got a book deal from Berkley Books to write a biography on Sonia Sotomayor.
• Jodi Heermann, who accepted a new position as the foundation manager for Newman Regional Health. She worked for Flint Hills Technical College Foundation for seven and a half years.
• Cheyenne Veatch, Angela Bartley and Kevin Veatch, who competed in the National High School Rodeo competition.
• Emporia State University student Harrison George, who formed a group called Program to Improve Emporia. The purpose of the group is to have the campus and community work together to help keep students in Emporia during their college years and beyond.
• The Neosho Valley Shrine Club, which cooked steaks for the Shrine Bowl East football squad that has been practicing in Emporia. The club cooked 140 steaks and served baked beans, corn on the cob, potatoes and french bread.
• Olpe football players Josh Klumpe and Cole Krueger, who will play in the Kansas Shrine Bowl this Saturday.
• Blake Eyman, who won 2009 Murphy’s Menu Coffee Cake Cook Off. His winning entry was a macadamia toffee coffee streusel cake. Judy Conway was the second place winner.
• The Emporia school district, for raising its test scores again this year.

Praise for the Shriners more often. Stories such as this
certainly point out that they are not just "party animals and
drunks" as some have been led to believe. They are
individuals with enormously huge hearts.
