It’s not exactly Habitat for Humanity, but Lyon County Humane Society members are organizing an assembly line to build houses for dogs that live outside or must be left outside for long periods of time.
“We’re having a community dog-house build where people in the community are coming together to build dog houses for dogs in need,” said Judy Dieker, executive director of the humane society. “All of the dog houses we build will be given away to individuals who can’t afford to purchase a dog house for their dog.”
The build will begin at 8 a.m. on Sept. 26 at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
Dieker now is looking for volunteers to commit to help build dog houses, and also for people to apply to receive dog houses once they are completed.
“People can call and volunteer,” she said. “They can spend the day or they can come and just work for an hour or two, whatever works best for them.”
Mark II Lumber and Sutherland’s will donate materials for the houses and the Granada Coffee Company has donated coffee for the workers. Amanda’s Cafe and Bakery will supply breakfast for workers and Bad Ol’ Bern’s BBQ and Ice Cream will provide lunch.
Donors in the community have contributed money earmarked for food, Dieker said. Dog biscuits donated earlier by Emporia Pet Products for the Pets in the Park event will be given away at the dog house build.
Novice and skilled volunteers are needed.
“We need painters,” Dieker said. “They don’t have to be qualified carpenters or anything, though qualified carpenters are welcome.
“We’re going to do like three production lines. There will be three people cutting out the materials and it’ll go to assembly and then finally to roofing and painting, so there’ll be someone there to show them what they need to do each step of the way — and it won’t be me,” Dieker said, laughing. “I can slap paint on it but that’s about it.”
Dieker asked that people call her in advance if they are willing to supply electric equipment, such as saws, for the project.
“But everyone that wants to help build should bring their own hammer,” she said.
Paint brushes also will be needed.
Humane Society members hope to be able to make an adequate supply of dog houses to protect the dogs from the whims of the weather.
“We have to think about the dogs and we have dogs both summer and winter that are tethered outside all day long and no shelter. So, that’s what’s prompting all of us,” Dieker said.
People who are willing to help with the project, or who want to donate funds or supplies, may call Dieker at 342-4477.

I have a nice igloo dog house, medium sized in great shape I will donate. We bought it last year but never used it since our dogs stay inside most of the time so they wont use it. You can email me too!

Maybe they can build a house for the homeless guy living on Market in the vacant lot.
