The Emporia A-16 Gold was just one win away from an unlikely trip to the State tournament, but it didn’t have one more big win left.
Ottawa crushed the Gold 13-1 in the Zone tournament championship game on Saturday at Garnett, capping three games between the teams over the three-day tourney and ending Emporia’s season.
The Gold knew it could beat Ottawa; it had done so in emphatic fashion on Friday night, scoring 12 runs in the seventh to roll to a 16-5 win and earn another chance on Saturday. But the title game featured a flip of the tables as Ottawa’s bats lit into Emporia starter Chase Speer.
