Cronkite, Emporia linked
Saturday, July 18, 2009
For at least two generations, the death on Friday of Walter Cronkite brought back many memories. And even those born after he retired from the CBS nightly anchor desk know him through clips used in fact-based movies like "Apollo 13."
Some Emporians may have memories of "Uncle Walter" that come closer to home. In 1996, Cronkite came to Emporia to film a segment for a documentary being made about William Allen White. Cronkite filmed at the White house on Exchange Street then came to The Gazette for a tour. While here, he graciously met workers throughout the building, shaking hands and asking them about the print side of journalism.
Cronkite died Friday at the age of 92. But he lives on in our memories and is forever linked with some of the greatest events of history during the middle to late part of the 20th century.

Walter & Virgil - two great men left on the same day. I bet they'll have a good conversation in Heaven.
