Bikers to compete at Camp Alexander

Mountain bikers from beginners to expert are welcome to a mountain bike race Sunday at Camp Alexander.

The race also is open to spectators, said LeLan Dains of Camp Alexander. There will be a former national champion in attendance, Dains added.

There will be various classes including expert men 34 and under and expert men 35 and up and an expert women open class. The men’s race will be 26 miles and the women’s race will be 20 to 26 miles. There also are categories for sports men 34 and under; sports men 35 and up; sports women 34 and under; and sports women 35 and up. The sports course is a total of 20 miles.

Categories for beginners include beginning men 34 and under; beginning men 35 and up; beginning women 34 and under and beginning women 35 and up. The beginning class is 13 miles.

The cost for the race is $25 for experts and $20 for everyone else. The cash payout for each expert class is minimum first place, $100; second place, $75; and third place, $50.

Other prizes to be determined include gear and gift certificates from High Gear Cyclery.

Any junior 18 and under wishing to participate in the contest in any of the classes may do so as 34 and under.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. Sunday at Camp Alexander. Registration closes for beginners and juniors at 10:45 a.m. and for experts/sport/single-speed at 12:15 p.m. Beginner men 34 and under will begin at 11 a.m. All other beginners and juniors will start in one-minute intervals following. Expert, sport and single-speed open will begin at 12:30 p.m. You will only be scored in your age group.

The course will be trails and gravel. The trail will consist of approximately four miles of single track (75 percent single and 25 percent double) and a couple of miles of gravel.
