Exploring career options, personal fitness, electrical engineering, making homemade ice cream and making a solar cooker are all things that students attending Kid’s College through Flint Hills Technical College learned about this summer.
The children attending FHTC’s annual Kid’s College July 13 -17 were able to experience a variety of hands-on activities to help them learn about possible career options. The 20 students attending Kid’s College started the week with The Make it Real Game.
Kansas Kids @ GEAR UP staff worked with the students to teach them about teamwork, decision-making, and the ability to make connections between school and future life-work situations. Kylia Floyd, a sixth grader from Emporia, really enjoyed the career exploration. “I learned that there are tons of jobs and you can get one that fits your interest,” Kylia said.
On Tuesday, the kids traveled to Emporia Fitness to learn about the importance of fitness, what it takes to become a personal trainer and different types of exercises that can be done at home. Going to Emporia Fitness was Destinee Bush’s favorite day. Destinee is a sixth grader from Emporia. “I liked the exercise equipment because I was going really fast on the elliptical machine,” she said.
Students also got to learn about becoming an “electrical engineer” for a day. Students powered a light bulb with lemon juice and made electromagnets with copper wire and bolts. “We got to play with lemons and I learned that lemons hold volts,” said Dylan Bush, a fifth grader from Emporia.
The students made a variety of flavors of homemade ice cream in the culinary arts kitchen and they also learned about the hospitality industry. Students also made a solar cooker out of pizza boxes.
“I liked it all,” said Autumn Howell, a seventh grader from Emporia.
Kid’s College is a week-long, half-day activity designed just for children that have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grade. Children have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers with lots of fun, hands-on activities.
