Public Safety workers locked in Friendly battle for blood

Local public-safety employees are out for blood.
The EMTs and firefighters and the law enforcement officers are having a contest to see which of the two groups can bring in the most blood donations for the American Red Cross.
“They give time to the community; they give a sense of security to residents; and they often give blood,” Red Cross Bloodmobile coordinator Bev Kerbs said in a news release. “They were born to give. Were you?”
The Emporia Battle of the Badges is held annually to bring in blood donations and to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood.
Donations may be made at the Emporia Presbyterian Church west campus, 1702 W. 15th Ave., from 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Everyone who donates will be able to vote for EMS and firefighters or law enforcement officers, with the team receiving the most votes being declared the Battle of the Badges trophy winner. All donors will receive a free Battle of the Badges T-shirt.
Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be 17 years old or older. Sixteen-year-olds may donate if they present completed parental consent forms.
Appointments to give blood may be made by calling 1-800-448-3543.
