Twilight 5,000; Jeff Boschee Basketball Clinic

Twilight 5,000

The Twilight 5,000 Road Race and Fitness Run/Walk is August 15 at 7:45 p.m. at Flint Hills Mall in Emporia. The race is sponsored by the Emporia State cross country team. Entry fee is $12 for anyone who registers before August 8 and $16 for anyone who registers after.

Participants will receive a T-shirt. Sizes are only guaranteed for those who register before August 8. The top three winners in each class (men and women) will receive Adidas apparel. Basketball Clinic

Former Kansas basketball player Jeff Boschee, now head coach at The Barstow School in Kansas City, Mo., will have a basketball clinic in Emporia on July 21 and 22 for players entering Grades 3-9 in the fall of 2009. Spots are still available.

The clinic will emphasize shooting, passing and dribbling in a fast-paced, educational and fun environment. A current KU player will assist with the clinic; past Jayhawks who have helped out include Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur and Russell Robinson.

Entry into the clinic costs $75 per player, which includes instruction, a backpack, a T-shirt, a basketball and an autograph session with players and coaches. Maximum capacity will be 65 players. ERC summer programs

The Emporia Recreation Commission's summer programs include the following activities with upcoming registration deadlines:

• Emporia State head coach Bob Fornelli and his staff have teamed up with Emporia Recreation to offer a baseball camps for 5 to 9-year olds and for 10 to 14-year olds. The camp will be held July 20-23 at Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The fee is $50 and the deadline to register is Friday. Camp for the younger players will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and concentrate on pitching and catching. Camp for the older group will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and concentrate on all aspects of the game.

• Fifth- and sixth-grade tackle football league, eight-game season. Practice begins week of Aug. 10, games begin Sept. 5. Registration fee $60 for residents, $75 for nonresidents. Registration deadline July 24.

Madison all-night coed softball tourney

Madison will be the site of an all-night coed benefit softball tournament on Friday and Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Madison Summer Recreation Fund. Allen football camp

Shawn Read’s “No Can’ts Camp” will work on football skills with students in third through eighth grades. The camp, from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 4 to 6 in Allen, costs $25, which includes a T-shirt.

announcers clinic

The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers will conduct a clinic for football public address announcers on Saturday, Aug. 1 in Topeka.

The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Capitol Federal Natatorium at Hummer Sports Park. It will be for announcers of junior high/middle school games, high school games, college games and youth football. The clinician will be Dan Roberts, stadium announcer for the Kansas City Chiefs. High school and college students who are announcing, or want to do so, are encouraged to register.

In addition to the do's and don'ts of announcing, the clinic will cover the P.A. announcer's role in promoting sportsmanship and dealing with emergency situations. To obtain information about the clinic and to register, go to http://www.naspaa.net or call (816) 305-6293.

Youth/handicap

deer hunt

The Riley County Fish and Game Association, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the Tuttle Creek Lake Corps of Engineers are seeking participants for the seventh annual youth/handicap assisted deer hunt on Sept. 12-13.

The hunt is open to youths 11-16 years old or anyone with a certified disability. Participants will need a Kansas hunting license, a deer permit and, if required by law, must also have taken an approved hunter education course. Rifles and ammunition for the hunt can be provided if participants do not have them. All participants will be required to attend a firearm safety presentation and sight-in at the Fancy Creek Ridge at 4 p.m. on Aug. 30.
