“Hawgs in the Hills” will make its debut on Saturday as a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and a hot-food sale is scheduled tonight at the Farmers Market.
Executive director Courtney Graves said that the event will be the first poker run sponsored by the agency. Money raised will be used to support Big Brothers Big Sisters in its service area — Chase, Coffey, Lyon and Morris counties.
The run will start at Bruff’s Bar and Grill, 2640 W. 18th Ave., in Emporia, with registration to start at 9 a.m. The first bike will go out at 10 a.m. and the last at 11 a.m.
Both bikes and vehicles are welcome to participate, Graves said.
The ride will take participants on a scenic tour of the Flint Hills. All will stop at the Hog Heaven Motorcycle shop before hitting West Highway 50 to go to Cottonwood Falls, where they will have lunch at the Emma Chase Cafe and have time to visit some historical sites at Cottonwood Falls.
From there, they will travel north to Council Grove. La Hacienda Mexican restaurant, the Dairy Queen and the lake north of Council Grove are among the stops included in Morris County.
Motorists next will go to Americus and pick up a card at the New Breck Cafe before returning to Bruff’s Steakhouse, where the “Head Hawg” will be determined, Graves said.
“But the kicker of it is when they get back to Bruff’s, they’re going to have the ‘Basement Boys’ out,” she said. The band will provide music while participants and their families take part in games and win prizes.
The cost of a single poker run hand is $25, with additional hands on sale for $5 each. A “Hawgs in the Hills” T-shirt also will be sold for $25.
The poker run is the latest in a series of fundraisers planned for the agency, which needs to recoup $28,959 in funding that was lost when state focus turned to high-risk juvenile offenders rather than low-risk offenders.
This evening beginning at 5 p.m., Graves will set up at the Farmers Market, Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street, for a foods fundraiser featuring:
• Cilantro Ranch Kabobs from ranch-raised T-Bone steak, with locally grown bell peppers and onions, marinated in a cilantro base, $3.
• Cilantro chicken kabobs from Tyson chicken breast, locally grown zucchini and onions, marinated in cilantro base, $3.
• Farmer Pete’s veggie kabobs, garden-fresh zucchini, squash, onion and bell peppers, marinated in fresh basil sauce, $2.
• Field-roasted corn hot off the grill with whipped cilantro butter, $2 per ear.
• All American dogs on Dolly Madison bun with all the fixings, $1.
• Southbound 35 salsa, $1 ala carte, $1.50 with chips. Made from local tomatoes, roasted sweet corn, jalapeno peppers and black beans.
• Iced tea, 50 cents; lemonade, $1.
