Clubs confused

Monday, July 13, 2009

Emporia Rotary Club did not receive credit in Section 6 of the Progress edition for a host of service work it performs in the community. Instead, because of a reporter’s error, the credit went to Lions Club, which has its own projects to benefit the Emporia area.

As a result, some quotes attributed to Lions Club’s outgoing president Phil Dillon actually were made by outgoing Emporia Rotary President Cynthia Patton.

Emporia Rotary Club, which meets at noon, established a scholarship at Flint Hills Technical College to celebrate its 100th anniversary, a project similar to a scholarship fund already established by the club at Emporia State University.

The project was completed by drawings-type fundraisers, including giving away a big-screen TV.

Emporia Rotary also gave the Girl Scouts land for its camp and contributed to establishing Hammond Park.

The Rotarians helped Emporia Friends of the Zoo build a lemur exhibit at the zoo and now are working on a five-year fundraising plan to help renovate the lemurs’ home.

The club is planning LemurFest! on Sept. 19 at the zoo as part of the new fundraising project.

Emporia Rotary President Cynthia Patton said that the club wants to raise $25,000 for the lemur exhibit renovation.

“We have been kidding each other that we want to take a lemur to lunch,” Patton said.
