Roosevelt High
The Roosevelt High School class of 1959 held their 50th class reunion and dinner on June 26 and 27. The weekend began Friday with a “meet and greet” in the Regency Room at the Best Western Motel. The group shared crackers and cheese, coffee and tea, along with high school yearbooks and memorabilia. On Saturday, classmates and guests toured the Granada Theatre; in the afternoon, they met at the home of Richard and Jane Slimon. The class dinner was served in the Flint Hills Room at the Best Western, preceded by a social hour. The program was music performed by Chuck Cowan. A special memorial was given for classmate Dianne Suits Costa of Leavenworth, who died June 25, 2009.
Those attending from out of state were Alvin and Pat Bass Winter of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Ray and Ann Rogers Boice of Gering, Neb.; and Everett and Barbara Moreland of Burlington, Colo.
Attendees from Kansas were Edgar and Carol Franklin of Auburn; Bob and Judy Crawford of Reading; Ken and Marilyn Eaton Johnson of Olpe; and Don and Judy Tull Lill and Richard and Jane Eaton Slimon of Emporia.
Special guests were Chuck and Donna Cowan of Mapleton.
Sunrise addition
The 13th annual Sunrise Addition neighborhood picnic was held June 28 on the lawn at the home of Doug and Sharon Morrisey on Sunrise Drive. Nanette DeLong was the coordinator.
This event was started in 1977 in the backyards of 808 Sunrise Drive and 811 Homewood St., and has moved around the neighborhood through the years. The area encompassed is east of Whildin Street to Weaver Street and from Highway 50 north to the by-pass.
Marylee Phillips has lived in the area the longest time, 45 years. The newest neighbors present were Daniel and Rowena Nelson, Emaline and Tate. The youngest in attendance, at three months, was Gracie Keller, and the “golden age one” was Wilma Lindsey.
The 2010 event will be held the last weekend in June on Homewood St. Hosts will be the Clark, Stice and Sosa families.
Albin family
Jane McIlvain and Richard McCoy of Emporia were hosts for an ice cream social during the Albin family reunion held June 27 and 28. Twenty-five out of town family members attended, along with Hank and Corrine Wilson and Waunie Davis of Emporia.
Dorthea Rohlek told family history stories and led a lesson in genealogy at the Emporia Public Library on the morning of June 27. That evening, Dori Moore and Mike Miller were hosts for picture sharing at the Best Western Motel, “making Saturday evening a fun event,” wrote the reporter.
On Sunday, the reporter said that a covered-dish lunch proved a great place to celebrate their forefathers, renew friendships and meet far-away cousins. Former Emporia resident Bob Ford gave the invocation and was auctioneer for the “fun auction,” of which proceeds will be used for newsletter expenses.
Those attending from California were Genie Wylie of San Diego, Craig and Lorie Laughlin of Auburn and Steve and Donna Albin of Los Altos; from Nebraska were Orville and Dorthea Rohlek of Scotts Bluff and Linda Linquist of Oceola; from Washington, John and Caryl Lynch of Seattle; and from Kansas, Mike Miller and Dori Moore of Leavenworth, Ernest Albin of Lebo; Billy Albin of Madison; John and Neva Parks of Council Grove; Dennis Ford and Bob and Carol Ford of Hutchinson; Jim and Michielle Cooper of Parsons; Jeannine Cooper of Saffordville; Richard and June Givens of Neosho Rapids; and Terry Ford and Jane McIlvain of Emporia. Other guests were Carolyn Henry of Madison and a friend and Arlene Fox of Lebo.
