From the family

THE FAMILY of Don Coldsmith would like to thank everyone who has reached out to us during the recent loss of our beloved husband and father. He was so special to everyone who knew him, and he will be greatly missed by us all. The tremendous outpouring of support from our friends and the community has touched us deeply.

A special thank you to Patrick Kelley and the staff at The Emporia Gazette, as well as The Associated Press, for the amazing editorial and tributes you wrote to honor him. We are amazed at the number of people he influenced over the years, and he would be humbled by your sincere words.

We are especially grateful and appreciative of the kindness and generosity shown by those who brought food, called, visited and offered your time and services to us without hesitation. The love and compassion which you’ve shown us can never be repaid, and we are blessed to have such strong support from all of you.

We would also like to thank Nancy Gamill of the First United Methodist Church for the beautiful and moving memorial service honoring Don’s life.

There are so many people we want to thank, and words cannot express how much your love, friendship, and support means to us.

With sincere gratitude and appreciation,

The family of Don Coldsmith

I was shocked to find out that Don Coldsmith had died, on June 25th, 2009. I live in the Kansas City area and he died the day after my birthday. I got to meet him once when he spoke at the West Wyandotte Branch of the Kansas City, KS Public Library many years ago and he kindly autographed one of his books for me. I became aware of his writing when I was a reference librarian and introduced his books to my father. We both loved and enjoyed his Spanish Bit Saga series. We particularly liked the way he realistically depicted the American Plains Indians, their lives, traditions, and history. He was an excellent writer and his novels were historically accurate and factual. I extend my sympathies to his family and friends. He was without a doubt, a fine man and he will be greatly missed by the many readers of his novels.
