GZIM AND FLORI VESELI, the brothers who recently opened the much-anticipated Italian Garden restaurant at 816 W. Sixth Ave. Many of the dishes on the menu are prepared using recipes from their mother.

• Clint Bowyer, Emporia native who drove his way to a win at Daytona last week in the Nationwide Series’ Subway Jalapeno 250.

• Emporia native and professional golfer J.L. Lewis, who recently published a book compiling his knowledge of the sport, “Golf Tips from the Tour.” The book contains tips Lewis picked up during his 25 years in the sport.

• The Emporia Energy 18-and-under softball team, which won its tournament in Wellington on Sunday. The team beat the Garden City Spirit 2-1 in the championship game.

• Teresa Handley, a radiology technician at Newman Regional Health who took time off work to drive a young father to Topeka to be with his newborn son after the baby was life-flighted to Stormont-Vail HealthCare.

• The seven Emporia State University athletes who recently made it onto the Academic All-District Team. ESU punter Johnny Torres and ESU softball players Miranda Campbell and Jill Peters made the first team; softball player Linda Ketter and ESU baseball players Kevin Wempe and Caleb Williamson, along with soccer player Marcie Fundis, all made the second team. ESU ranks 10th in the nation in producing Academic All-Americans named by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

• The Emporia Blues baseball team, which swept Ottawa in Tuesday’s doubleheader. The team won the first game 13-7 and the second game 13-0.

• The Emporia AAA baseball team, which beat Augusta in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The team pulled out a 6-5 win in the opener and won the second game 12-0.

• The 400-meter relay team of Jaelynne Hill, Shelby Siess, Courtny Smart and Emily Elbert, who won the girls’ 9-and 10-year-old division at the State Hershey Track and Field meet on June 19-20 in Hutchinson. Siess also finished fourth in the standing long jump, and Elbert finished seventh in the softball throw. All four are from Americus.
