Scam alert

Emporia police are warning the public of a “manipulative phone call prank” in which a caller claims to be an official from some government agency and warns the recipient that an emergency has placed them in danger and they must take immediate action to be safe. The caller then gives detailed instructions about what to do, which may include breaking windows or otherwise damaging property.
Police said people getting such calls should hang up and call 911 to see if there really is an emergency. If the caller’s number appears on caller ID, save it.
