Utter disdain

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

ANYONE who reads “The People Speak” column and “These Are the Rules” at the bottom of the column, already knows that The Gazette will edit each letter for length, grammar, spelling and sense. As a faithful (albeit sometimes critical) reader, I have a request: Please edit for hatefulness, spite, and please, please, for veracity.

I have endured a reading from Gary Lukert several times and found that length, grammar and spelling (after editing) were no problem for him. His letter in the June 16 paper showed, as usual, his remarkable disdain for truth and again as usual, sense, even plain common sense was absent from his reckonings/rantings. His disdain for truth leaves me with disdain for his writings.

There was a bright spot on that day’s editorial page, thankfully. Dennis Mosebey was masterful as he presented the true feelings of all who are truly pro-life. May I please add this: Bless you, Mr. Mosebey, Sir, and amen.

I wish they would enforce the blog rules better, also. I thought personal attacks were not allowed but see them all the time. It's one thing to say a person seems to hold this or that stand on something but another to call someone names. I had someone rant about what a delusional fool I was but when I requested the removal of the comment, it was never done. That was all he/she was saying, going off on another person. I thought that was unacceptable but I guess not.

Wasn't Gary Lukert the one that said Bush and Hitler were brought to earth by the same evil space ship and they were here to take away everyones happy fun time? Yeah, I remember that piece.

Why don't you just go to that last article Lukert wrote and conduct argument with more specifics? It's still on the News Forum. If you have that much disdain for anyone's writings, don't read them.

I already pretty much summed it up in my first post here. It's amazing how many people believe his writings are factual but as love is blind so is hate I reckon.

Actaully, I kindof like it when the post a Gary Lukert article. He is the one single person on here that I don't feel the least bit of remorse for calling an out-and-out idiot. Every time he posts an article it makes the case for the opposition better than nearly anything else. It's kindof like if you're trying to make a case against allowing drunks to drive. What better poster child/photo op to strengthen your view than to hand a set of keys over to a blind staggering drunk with a car in the middle of a china shop?
Besides, it's a piece of cake to post a ton of facts that pretty much prove the exact opposite of what he claims. Makes it even that much funnier.
Free country. We all know by now the Gazette is going to post an overwhelming number of viewpoints from one side only so as far as I'm concerned it just as well be him as someone that actually has a smidgeon of intelligence. Its their (tongue-in-cheek) way of actually showing some balance. Print a few articles to the left to give some genuine points of view and spark some good discussions, then print something that makes the sensible people on the left totally embarrassed to have him among them. Reverse psychology of a sort.

I was not referring to you, observation. It's one thing to banter and debate back and forth. It's a totally other thing to attack a person and start calling names etc. That is totally against the user agreement and I was more upset that the staff didn't follow up and remove the rants than at that the person put them up. We should all be adults on here and able to have a civilized discussion without resorting to name calling and rude comments.

It is udder disdain as Observation already pointed out, cows are stupid, but without them there wouldn't be any ice cream, ribeye steaks, or late nights pulling calves, and, this is one of the most humorous threads ever. What got into all you people anyway??

I think there might be a storm coming. We all get a little nutty when the barometer is falling. When I was still teaching, I could always tell by the kids' behavior that it was gonna storm.

I'm surprised seriously doesn't have any udder music for us yet. I wish we could hear music directly on this site. Wouldn't it be udderly wunnerful, wunnerful?

For chiefsfan from podictionary.com...

The podictionary word for today is sky: Today if you walk into a book store or visit one online, their offerings are classified into a boggling number of genres. In fact there are plenty of bookstores that specialize in only one genre.

Back in the time of Chaucer this diversity of publication themes was not quite so extensive, but there were even then different genres in medieval bookstores. One of these has now become known as the bestiary—about beasts. International travel was a privilege of very few people in those days and just as we moderns still flock to movies about wildlife such as March of the Penguins in those days people were interested in the strange and wonderful beasts out there in the world.

Of course these included dragons and mythical beasts along with flesh and blood animals, but just as we seem to have done with March of the Penguins, our forebears felt it necessary to attach human values, morals and meaning to the characteristics of the animals portrayed. The lion is regal, the phoenix rising from its ashes is Christ’s reselection. And so, lying in the hand written pages of one of these bestiaries written around the year 1220, we find the first use in English of the word sky.

The entry describes how the eagle, when old and feeble revives itself—almost phoenix-like—by flying up through skies six and seven to burn its feathers on the sun and fall into a spring of fresh water. And true to form, this old bestiary goes on to liken the revival of the eagle to the refreshment of man’s soul when attending church. But it is the sky that interests us here. Six or seven skies?

When I think of the sky it is a blue dome arched over me. Here the OED tells us the meaning of sky at its first appearance didn’t mean the clear blue, but the clouds. And the phrase “at sixes and sevens” means by chance so that the eagle is flying through whatever clouds chance threw in his way. Although sky meaning the “blue dome” as we know it appeared pretty soon after sky meaning clouds, the meaning of clouds persisted right up until about Shakespeare’s time.

Now that you are totally bored, I can hear you say, "but, but, but what about the word itself, the word sky. Where does it come from?"

Create's version:

One day, while returning home from a hunt empty handed, an unhappy caveman looked up and said, "sk." His companion, equally unsuccessful, looked up and agreed by saying, "aye." Together, without ever really realizing it, they'd invented a word for looking up and seeing what is up above our heads.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
