A young Wichita man escaped injury Saturday afternoon after he wrecked the motorcycle he was riding following a pursuit that reached speeds over 100 miles per hour.
Grant Laham, 19, of Wichita was treated at the scene of the accident by Emporia-Lyon County emergency medical technicians.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Elwood Phelps said that he had clocked Laham’s speed at 85 miles per hour at Milepost 141 on Interstate Highway 35.
“Then I tried to stop him and, well, he took off,” Phelps said.
The incident began at 2:43 p.m.
The chase reached a top speed of 140 miles an hour in a 55 mph zone.
“He was traveling 100 on gravel roads,” Phelps said. “... He couldn’t get stopped in time at the T intersection.”
Laham’s motorcycle apparently caught the edge of the ditch as it went over Burlingame Road at Road 200. He and the motorcycle came to rest on private property in a field.
Laham was wearing a helmet and eye protection, Phelps said.
