Businesses ready for Super Bowl watchers

Wanting company or a better television are just two reasons that some will seek out public spots to watch Sunday’s Super Bowl. Whatever the reason, local businesses are ready. A quick telephone survey by The Gazette turned up these specials around town.

Although some networks will be televising Super Bowl pregame coverage all afternoon, NBC’s coverage of the football contest between the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers begins at 5 p.m. local time.

• Town Royal, 405 Commercial St., will have a “covered-dish, potluck kind of thing,” bartender Becky Mishler said.

The bar will provide hot dogs, chili dogs, and seven television sets. “Anyone who comes is encouraged to bring some food to share,” Mishler said.

• Carry-in food, as well as restaurant food, will be available at The New Breck in Americus, depending on where you sit.

Owner Jena Johnson, who used to hold a combination Super Bowl and birthday party in her home for about 100 people each year, has moved that celebration to the restaurant.

The dining room will be open for business as usual, while the Super Bowl party will be underway in the bar area.

“We have four TVs,” Johnson said, “and what we are having in the bar area is bring your covered dish and we’re having drink specials and appetizer specials in case they don’t bring something.”

• Bruff’s, 2640 W. 18th Ave., will have special pricing for a number of its foods and beverages, including $15 for buckets of beer and “lots of appetizer deals.”

• The kitchen at Coach’s, 2702 W. 15th Ave., will close at 4 p.m. No specials are planned on drinks, but the business will be open for people who want to come in to watch the game.

• The Noose, 323 Commercial St., will open at 11 a.m. on Sunday and will have a potluck snack area for the game.

“Then we’re also having $2.50 Bud Light bottles,” said Noose manager Kristine Palmer.

• Wings & Things, 409 Commercial St., will have half-price appetizers and $1.50 12 oz. draws on Sunday. The restaurant’s hours will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

• A football-throwing contest, food and prizes giveaways will be part of the celebration at J Mo’s, 518 Commercial St.

“We have a big half-time competition,” said owner Joy Morgan.

A grand prize will be given to the winner, with other prizes being given away in drawings during the game.

“Every time you buy a drink, you get a coupon,” Morgan said.

Bottled beer will cost $2 and a special souvenir Super Bowl glass to keep will be available for $3.50, filled.

Chili, queso, chips sausage, cheese and vegetable platters and little smokies will be available for patrons.

“It’s a huge spread,” Morgan said.

• The Eclipse, 10 W. 11th Ave., will open at 5 p.m. for its Super Bowl party.

Co-owner Laura Sandoval said management will bring in snack foods for the patrons and will have a special for those who prefer beer.

“We’re going to do $2 bottles,” she said.

• Bar manager Cindy Thompson said that $1 draws and $6 pitchers will be specials for the celebration at the Purple Duck, 1516 W. Sixth Ave.

“Anybody can bring food in and eat,” she added.

• Annie’s West, 3021 W. Highway 50, will open at noon on Sunday, with its usual draft beer specials, $1.25 for small draws and $2.25 for large ones. Food also will be available.

“But the food won’t start until Super Bowl time,” said bartender JaNell Leiszler.

$2.50 bottles? Isn't that the normal cost at most bars? What are they normally? I must be outta touch. $1.75 draws and$2-$2.50 bottles at the 2 bars I go to.

well Weltha,
My dive went to $2 draws and $3 bottles 2 years ago and have had 4 wholsale price increases since. It seems like in Emporia, bars are supposed to keep their prices at a low level no matter what their costs are. I think there is more than 1 bar where bottles are $3.25 now. Just like gasoline and milk & the loaf of bread, booze costs do go up.

A long time ago, I used to go to a bar called The Honky Tonk in Slidell, LA. Every Friday night was their "special". It was a $5 cover to get in and beer was free until 10pm (they opened at 7pm). From 10-midnight all drinks were full price and from midnight-2am, beer was then 25 cents/cup. From 2-4, everything was again full price.

I thought it was genius. Get everyone good and drunk from 7-10 and by then, people are more than willing to pay anything to have more. And then they stick around until midnight waiting on the "deal" again. It really is GENIUS.

They had 2 floors. Downstairs was the "country" bar that had dancing, pool tables, etc., and upstairs was the "rock" bar that also had dancing and pool tables.

I have no idea if they still do that but I just thought I'd throw out the idea of another "special". That bar was always jam-packed because no one else in the area offered anything close to that.
