Spartan wrestlers in fourth at Garden City
Emporia High’s wrestling team was in fourth place after one day at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City.
The Spartans logged 114 points on Day One. Rio Rancho, N.M., led after one day with 192 points, followed by Roosevelt, Colo., with 163 points and Ponderosa, Colo., with 124.
EHS has 12 wrestlers remaining in the tournament, and Mark Kolmer (189 pounds) and Lorenzo Serna (285 pounds) will both wrestle in tonight’s championship matches at 6 p.m.
JV boys bowlers
win again
Emporia High’s junior varsity boys bowling team won its third straight tournament in the Spartans’ home opener Friday at Flint Hills Lanes.
The Spartan boys racked up 2,297 points, with Anthony Buckridge leading the way with a 621 series. Austin Shovick rolled a 615 series to finish second among all bowlers. The Spartans easily finished ahead of Hayden (2,016 points) and Topeka High (1,553).
The JV girls squad finished second to Topeka High, putting up 1,550 points. Teagan Lapping led the Spartans with a 410 series, good for a third-place tie, and Kori Lapping rolled a 402 series to finish sixth.

A-team now 8-0
Emporia Middle School’s eighth-grade A-team defeated Junction City on Thursday by a 51-50 score and ran its record to 8-0.
Jackson Perez had 22 points for the Vikings, and J.L. Savage scored 12 and dished out five assists.
