A former registrar at Emporia State University has been charged with four counts of theft from Beta Sigma Phi social sorority.
Charges were filed Dec. 29 against Jill L. Megredy, 46, who made her first appearance in Lyon County District Court on Jan. 20.
Megredy is accused of two counts of theft between $1,000 and $25,000, Level 9 non-person felonies, and two counts of theft under $1,000, Class A misdemeanors.
According to a complaint filed with the court by Assistant Lyon County Attorney Rick Buck, Megredy is alleged to have taken $2,000 from the Beta Sigma Phi account on March 20, $1,000 from the account on April 4, $800 on March 22, and $300 on May 20, all in 2008.
An affidavit filed by Emporia Police Officer David Holmes stated that he spoke with several representatives of Beta Sigma Phi on Nov. 10, 2008, at the police department. The women told Holmes that when they checked the sorority’s bank account, they found a shortage of $4,100.
Megredy had been treasurer of the sorority and had dropped the sorority’s checkbook off at the workplace of a sorority member’s husband, to pass on to the new treasurer.
Sorority members became somewhat suspicious because one of the members had received an e-mail from Megredy, who asked for a loan.
After checking with the bank and looking in the checkbook, they told Holmes that Megredy had written four checks to herself for a total of $4,100. Megredy said she had planned to repay the account after her husband got money for his education, but “things would come up” and she did not make any deposits, the affidavit said.
Holmes said in the affidavit that during an interview with Megredy, she said she did not know why she didn’t talk with sorority members about the problem and that she “wondered why they had called the police instead of just coming to her about the issue.”
Megredy resigned as registrar and was replaced by an interim registrar in April.

she “wondered why they had called the police instead of just coming to her about the issue.”????
Because she is a Crook, thats why! Duh!
I wonder if she would let me "borrow" $4000 out of her account, without her knowledge and never pay it back wothout calling the police? Maybe she would just come by and visit, and ask, Oh by the way, I noticed you stole $4000 out of my account, could you please give it back now? Whatever!

Dear universitystudent,
It is standard practice in the journalism community to credit other publications or news services when their articles are used for a story.
For instance, you'll see The Gazette localize an AP story that will include phrases like "The Associated Press reported" or use a quote and say "told The Associated Press."
It is a broadcasting practice to use stories from other media and say things like "The Emporia Gazette reported..."
In this case, The Gazette's reporter, Bobbi Mlynar, did her own reporting for this article, pulling the court file and copying documents in it from which to quote. She also pulled information from The Gazette's archives. There was no reason to cite The Bulletin's article.

Lifegoeson--
You hit the nail on the head.
Why would they not come to her first?? Are you kidding me?
You steal something and then say "well before they go the police I think they should first come and talk to me about it?" Why?? So, you don't have to go through the public humiliation or possibly so that you don't get fired from your other job, which hopefully doesn't give you access to their checkbook.
I have an idea, how about to protect yourself from humiliation and to protect your job, you try this.....DON'T STEAL!!!

Doing prison time for $4,100.00? She must have read "Embezzlement for Dummies", or "Theft for Dummies". I don't condone either practice but for crying out loud understand the risk versus reward. Bernie Madoff did. That guy will probably get probation or be appointed to a cabinet post. Heh heh.
I guess I should fire my accountant. His name is Brad Stealmoney.
