3 remain in custody in alleged torture

Friday, January 30, 2009

Three people remain in the Lyon County Jail on accusations that they kidnapped, tortured and robbed an Emporia man during a prolonged incident on Jan. 21.

Charged are Olga Isabelle Crowell-Cantu, 20; Calvin Scott, 37; and Charles Scott, 38, all of Emporia.

All have been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, theft between $25,000 to $100,000, criminal use of a financial card less than $1,000 in seven days, conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

Calvin Scott also is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threat with intent to terrorize or cause evacuation, and aggravated battery.

The affidavit filed in the case was submitted by William R. Halvorsen, special agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Halvorsen wrote that Cantu-Crowell, charged as Crowell-Cantu, described as “well-known” to the victim, allegedly called the man to see if she could come to his travel home at Emporia RV Park west of Emporia. He consented and she arrived a few minutes later.

The victim said he noticed two men he did not know in the shadows adjacent to his home. He became suspicious and pushed Crowell-Cantu outside.

“As he did so, the two males pushed their way into the home,” the agent wrote.

One of the Scotts began striking the victim with his fists and forced him onto a bed, with his hands bound behind his back with bed sheets.

The accused did not find cash in the victim’s wallet, but did find four credit cards. When the victim did not provide his Personal Identification Number, Halvorsen wrote, one of the men stabbed him with a sharp object, cutting his buttocks. The suspect also burned the man with a cigarette.

The suspect then placed a .38-caliber handgun owned by the victim against the man’s head and pulled the trigger.

“The gun was either unloaded or misfired, resulting in no physical injury to (the victim),” the affidavit stated.

The suspects reportedly loaded some items from the victim’s home into a vehicle, then told him that they were leaving, but were going to burn his home with him still tied inside.

The victim’s sports utility vehicle later was found in the 1400 block of Center Street. None of the property was located inside.

I'm glad they're in jail where they belong.
Test 'em for drugs too. Mr. Goodman, make this good. There are no eye witnesses, only the victim's testimony. It's easy to see this was a set up by that female; that's conspiracy so she needs to spend a long time in prison too. Vicious cowards!

Olga has been a mess for years. She has had all kinds of charges, been in and out of rehab and mental health services. She is a young woman failed by the system and now she has tortured someone else. Shocking! When we don't take care of kids they turn into adults that commit crimes.... Maybe someday our society will finally get that.

And to EmporiaMama: It is very sad that the mentally ill are not cared for properly in our society. On the other hand....they are still responsible for their actions. And the two men involved......what's their excuse?

Hmmm....Failed by the system? I personally know Olga, and in my opinion, the system can't help someone who does not want the help. The person I know, (Olga) enjoys crime, the easy way out of things, so it's hard for me to view this as a system failure. As for the other two, what excuses will people find for them. These three people need to pay for their crime, enough slaps on the hands already, put these three behind bars where they belong. This poor man, his only mistake was to be an aquaintance of Olga, thats where all his troubles began. I'm real sorry for what he had to go through in the hands of these three very inconsiderate, non-feeling people.

Sounds to me like the victim was expecting a little something-something from the female, and ended up getting robbed in the process.

Sometimes people don't know the situation is, I personally know Olga and it's been hard for me to understand this young lady. She has lived a life nobody can understand. We as parents sometimes fail our own children. They learn by our examples and that is what happen to this young lady. I do agree when someone does a crime they should pay the time. But until they are proven guilty we should not as men judge. Leave that in the hands of whom it belongs too!
