Emporia State football coach Garin Higgins has added Matt Walter to his staff as the wide receivers coach and coach of the strength and conditioning program.
Walter helps fill the void left by Spence Nowinsky and Travis Fox.
Nowinsky, who was the defensive line coach, left to take a coaching position at Illinois State. Fox, who was in charge of strength and conditioning and also served as the offensive line coach, has left coaching to pursue other options.
Walter spent the last four seasons as the strength and conditioning coach for New Mexico State. He was also in the same position for one year at Southeastern Louisiana and was the assistant strength and conditioning coach for a year at Louisiana Tech.
Walter played for Higgins at Northwestern Oklahoma State, where he was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American running back in 2000 as his squad finished as national runners-up. In 1999, Walter helped his team capture the NAIA National Title, posting a 13-0 record.
Higgins has also made some changes in-house to his staff. Running backs coach Gary Manual and tight ends coach Sean Clowers have been named co-offensive coordinators.
Former Hornets Mike LoPorto and Marcus Mead will join join the staff as graduate assistants.
