Drainage problem fixed at day care

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Lyon County has completed a project at Emporia Child Care Center III behind the Lyon County Health Department, commissioners were told during Wednesday’s action session.

The work was done on the center’s playground to prevent flooding into the building, said Chip Woods, Lyon County engineer. When heavy rains occur, the center experiences floods that cause carpeting and other items inside the center to be destroyed. The center came to the county for help to prevent the flooding.

Woods said the work cost $5,750 and was recently completed. A wall was built to prevent water from coming in to the building and to encourage the water to drain another way.

“We put in a metal ramp at the curb with the gate so if they have to evacuate they don’t have to take a crib and try to lift it over the curb,” Woods said.

Woods said the flooding was caused when the center had work done on the playground including having a concrete sidewalk placed in the middle of the playground.

“They built sidewalks and water couldn’t go over it,” Woods said.

In other business, commissioners:

F Approved the low bid of Kansasland Tire for 16 trailer tires at $255 each for a total of $4,080.

F Approved a proposal from Wilson & Company for $1,598 to perform the hydraulic assessment for the 16-inch culvert on Road 180 by David Traylor’s residence.

F Approved the purchase of two demo motor graders for $242,650 from Berry Tractor Co. in Wichita.

F Gave direction to move forward with a grant application with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to clean up an illegal dump site at Gibson Recycling on South Avenue.

F Authorized chairman Scott Briggs to sign a letter of support for the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas grant with the Kansas Department of Transportation.
