A driver who failed to stop at the intersection of Kansas Highways 177 and 4 in north Morris County died Monday night when his vehicle was struck by oncoming traffic.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Jacob J. Schuirmann, 30, of Dwight was driving a 1994 Geo Metro east on K-4 when he apparently ran a stop sign. The car crossed K-177 in front of a 2006 Dodge Durango driven by Missy Smies, 39, of Council Grove. The Durango struck the Metro on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Schuirmann’s body was taken to Penwell-Gable Funeral Home in Council Grove. He was not wearing a safety restraint.
A passenger in Schuirmann's car, 24-year-old Robert A. Clair of Council Grove, was taken by Morris County Emergency Medical Service personnel to Mercy Hospital in Manhattan.
Smies and her two passengers — Donald Smies, 44; and Jack Smies, 5, both of Council Grove — were not injured. The adults were wearing safety restraints and the child was secured in a child safety restraint.
KHP reported it was not known whether Clair was wearing a safety restraint.
