Murder trial starts
WINFIELD — Two years after Cowley College student Jodi Sanderholm was found dead, the man accused of raping and killing her goes on trial.
Jury selection began today in the capital murder trial of Justin Thurber, who is charged with kidnapping, raping and killing the 19-year-old Sanderholm. Her body was found in the Kaw Wildlife Area several days after she went missing.
Last month, a judge decided that the 25-year-old Arkansas City man is competent to stand trial. Thurber had been taken to Larned State Hospital for a mental evaluation.
Sanderholm was a student at Cowley College and a member of the school’s dance team.
During pretrial hearings, 13 women testified that Thurber had pursued, stalked or sexually assaulted them before Sanderholm’s killing.
