Meet a Gazette Mom

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Age: 38

Location: Emporia

Occupation: Full-time mom, full-time student, works part-time at Emporia Physical Therapy

Family members: son, Ethan Moyer, 10 years old

The television mom I’m most like: I would have to say, “Reba.” She is a single mom who loves her kids very much. She can sometimes be embarrassing and slightly overprotective. She is everyone’s friend and her life is anything but ordinary.

My favorite outdoor activity to do with my child: Go to his baseball, football and basketball games and cheer him on. I love watching him play his sports.

The one think I wish I had known about parenting before I became a parent: How to manage your time so everyone is happy. I still can’t seem to quite fit everything in that I set out to do that day. Ethan always tells me, “But you said this morning...”

The most important life lesson I want my child to learn: Be responsible for your actions and treat everyone as you would want to be treated.

The invention I wish I could create to make my life easier: A robot to clean my house. It seems that the housework is the last thing to get my attention. I clean on weekends and what doesn’t get done will have to wait until the next weekend.

My proudest moment as a parent: When Ethan was sworn in as an honorary soldier of the United States Army for his wish through Make-A-Wish Foundation. Having so many people in the room from all branches of service watching and knowing that it meant a lot to him to do this was quite amazing to see.

The thing about my younger self that I’d like to reclaim: My figure from high school and my energy from my adolescent years.

The kid’s snack I am most likely to be caught eating: Ice cream. I love ice cream, and I am usually the one that gets most of it.

When I have 30 minutes to myself: Usually the 30 minutes come after Ethan has gone to bed. I either watch TV, look around the computer, study for school or I will just go to bed.

My most embarrassing parenting moment: I have had several, but I am sure it would have to be at one of his baseball games. I can get rather loud when cheering for him and his team. I tend to holler out at the quieter times. I am working on it.

The future parenting moment I fear the most: Ethan going off to college. I have always said that I was going to move to the town where he goes to college. He said that he was going to call the police and tell them a crazy lady is following him.

If I could throw a temper-tantrum it would be because: My son has kidney disease and is on a strict diet. I have wanted to scream and kick several times in the grocery store when buying groceries. I have to read all labels and not just go down the aisle and pick whatever. I get over it and go on because it is what I have to do.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a parent is: My son being diagnosed with kidney disease when he was 7 years old has been the biggest challenge. Helping him deal with the restrictions of his diet, the medication he has to take and the fish liver oil he has to drink is a huge challenge.

If I had an “I’d rather be...” bumper sticker on my car, it would say: “I’d rather be in Colorado.” I love the mountains and some of the snow. My wish is to go to Aspen skiing!

The one thing I hope to do better as a parent in 2009: To let go of the leash a little bit. I need to relax a little more and not always believe the worst is going to happen. I am trying, but not sure how it’s going to go.
