The score was still close, but coach Rick Bloomquist had had it.
Emporia High had been too soft and too tentative for his taste in the Spartans’ game against Andover Central in the second round of the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute. An angry Bloomquist went to the end of his bench with about 1:20 remaining and Emporia High trailing by just six. Guard Darnell Bartlett knocked down a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to slice the lead to three — but then Bloomquist called a timeout he didn’t have, resulting in a technical foul. Andover Central made both technical shots and went on to win 56-46, snapping Emporia High’s string of two straight Ralph Miller titles.
