Final performance

James Starr will perform the final solo recital of his career at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall at Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. Jeremy Starr also will perform with his father. There is a charge, with proceeds to be used for scholarships. A reception will be given by the Starr family after the recital. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $4. At the Granada

The Millers (formerly the Clayton Miller Band), a blues band featuring brothers Cole, Clayton and L.D. and their father, Larry Miller, will perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Granada Theatre. According to the news release, the Millers “have traveled the world, sharing the stage with Stevie Wonder, Joan Jett, Kanye West, Ziggy Marley and B.B. King all before the youngest member, L.D.’s 13th birthday.” The band was the second place winner on the television show, “America’s Got Talent.” The Miller’s play a mixture of blues favorites and original pieces. “L.D’s amazing blues harmonica will have you on your feet,” stated the release. • Continuing through March at the ESU Norman R. Eppink Gallery is the Engraving Invitation Portfolio, which includes 25 artists from all over the country. The purpose of the exchange is to celebrate the technique of engraving in printmaking, stated the press release. Curators are ESU associate professor James Ehlers and associate professor Gerry Wubben and Larry Schuh, both from McNeese State University.

Dewayn Brothers

The Dewayn Brothers will perform at 10 p.m. at Beer: 30, 402 Merchant St., on Valentine’s Day. The band has just returned from a 21-show tour of the southern United States.

Wichita Symphony

The Wichita Symphony Orchestra Classics concerts continue with Popular Classics-Bach to Bluegrass, Gershwin to Gyspy - Time for Three string trio at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 and 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Century II Concert Hall, 225 W. Douglas in Wichita. They are described in the music bulletin as the “most innovative trio on the classical music circuit today;” a “high-energy performance not to be missed.”

Exhibitors wanted

The Hays Arts Council has announced the 40th annual Smoky Hill Art Competition and Exhibition, open to any artist currently living in Kansas. Entries are due by March 5, 2009. Writing contests

F The Butler County History Center is accepting historical non-fiction articles and Flint Hills poetry for the 25th Annual Writing Competition. The “Flint Hills” was chosen as the theme for the poetry division. The competition is open to the public, 16 years or older, with Kansas residency not required. F The Kansas Voices Writing Contest, sponsored by the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council, is open to all writers living in Kansas, with all entries to be postmarked by March 15, 2009. Short stories, prose or poetry, with no particular subject matter required, may be entered.
